The Guyana Govt should 'cultivate' the media

The fact that the government and even president are openly hostile to the Stabroek News tells me that there is something to hide from the public. Wouldn't the public be more at ease if the Government didn't attack the press? Am I missing something here? Shouldn't the government lay off the press and even warm up to it a little bit in hopes of getting on ppl's good side? I've GOT to be missing something.
